Turn the Leaf

Ages 6-9

Tuvia presses a leaf onto his paper.

His friend holds the finished example beside it.

"Turn it over."

Tuvia turns the paper over.

"Not the paper," his friend says. "The leaf."

Tuvia puts the paper back. He picks up the leaf and turns it sideways.

His friend reaches toward it.

Tuvia lifts it away.

"Show me with yours."

His friend puts down the example. He takes a spare leaf and holds its flat side up. Then he turns it so the raised lines show.

Tuvia looks at his own leaf.

He turns it the same way and lays it on the paper.

His friend holds the example beside it again.

This time Tuvia rubs the crayon across the correct side. The leaf's thin lines appear beneath the color.

His friend's example stays at one side. On Tuvia's paper, one long leaf line reaches from stem to tip.
