The Words Beside the Numbers
Chapter 1Three Coins Short
"It is three short," Yael said.
At the Bais Yaakov classroom table, Tzippy counted the coins again.
Their pretend shop was part of the arithmetic lesson. One girl chose paper goods from a list; the other checked the total and returned the right change.
Yael had joined the class two days earlier. Her family had moved from another country. She understood their classroom language, but sometimes searched for a word before answering.
Tzippy had been explaining slowly, one number at a time.
Now the new girl was telling her the change was wrong.
"I know how to do it," Tzippy said.
Yael pointed to the list.
Three coins were missing.
Chapter 2The Slow Answer
Tzippy returned the three coins.
Then she gave Yael the easier role of choosing an item.
"You can just point. I'll do the total."
Yael looked at the list without pointing.
"I would like to..."
She paused.
Tzippy filled the gap.
"Buy the little notebook?"
"No. Check the total this time."
The words had taken a moment. The request inside them wasn't uncertain.
Tzippy passed her the pencil.
She felt awkward about how helpful she had thought she was being.
Chapter 3Not the Same Column
Yael wrote three prices in a column and added them correctly.
Mrs. Klein came to check. Her black sheitel was neatly covered by a light scarf.
"Good. Now explain how you found the change."
Yael began, stopped at a word, and looked at the board.
Tzippy nearly explained for her.
Mrs. Klein waited.
Yael pointed to subtraction and finished the explanation.
Afterward, the teacher quietly asked Tzippy what she had noticed.
"The numbers were right. The explanation took longer."
"Those are two different things," Mrs. Klein said.
Tzippy had been putting them in the same column.
Chapter 4The Help She Wanted
At break, Tzippy asked Yael whether she wanted help with the words on the arithmetic board.
"Some of them," Yael said.
"I thought you needed the easy part of the shop."
"I used to do this at my old school. The words are different here."
"I'm sorry I chose for you."
Yael nodded.
"Please let me finish when I start saying something."
Tzippy had thought a pause was an empty place anyone could fill.
To Yael, it was part of a sentence she was still making.
They copied four useful words onto a small practice card, with examples beside them.
Yael chose which four.
Chapter 5A Different Kind of Help
During the next shop lesson, Tzippy made another error.
She subtracted the price from the wrong amount.
Yael pointed to the first number.
"You paid this much, not that much."
Tzippy checked and began again.
Yael didn't say she would do every total from now on because Tzippy had made a mistake.
She helped with the part that needed help.
Tzippy could see how much more comfortable that felt than being given the easiest job before anyone checked what she knew.
They finished the exercise with both names at the top.
The names didn't need separate columns for helper and helped.
Chapter 6The Class Question
Mrs. Klein asked who could explain one solution to the class.
Yael raised her hand.
Tzippy looked at the practice card.
She wanted to hold it up before Yael reached a difficult word.
Instead, she left it on the table where Yael could choose to use it.
Yael made one mistake in a word and corrected herself.
Then she explained the calculation clearly.
The teacher asked another girl to show a different way.
Yael's turn was an ordinary part of the lesson, not an announcement that the new girl had finally become capable.
She had been capable while the sentence was still waiting.
Chapter 7A Word Tzippy Needed
At lunch, Yael described a game she used to play with her cousins.
She said its name in the language her family spoke at home.
Tzippy asked her to repeat it.
The sounds were unfamiliar. Tzippy got them wrong twice.
Yael said them slowly and waited.
"I'll need to practise that," Tzippy said.
"I need to practise lots of words here."
They smiled.
Tzippy didn't ask Yael to translate every family conversation or perform words for the whole table.
They were talking about one game because Yael had brought it up.
Chapter 8Waiting for the Last Word
Later that week, Yael began telling Mrs. Klein that the shop list had two prices for the same folder.
She paused while looking for the word printed.
Tzippy saw the two numbers too.
She could speak first and get the problem settled quickly.
Instead, she waited.
Yael found the word and finished.
Mrs. Klein corrected the list for the whole class.
On their table, the practice card had acquired two more words and a small crease.
It would help for a while. Other words would need other help.
Tzippy passed Yael the coin box for the next turn.
"Would you like to check, or choose first?"
Yael chose to check.
This time, the choice was hers before the first number was written.
