The Word He Made Louder

Chapter 1The Tall Door

At the school library desk, Berel asked Mr. Cohen where to find a book about doors.

He was building a paper castle in class. He wanted a picture of a tall arched doorway.

"Doors?" Mr. Cohen asked.

"Doors," Berel repeated, a little louder.

Mr. Cohen looked toward the building-repair shelf.

"Do you want a book about fixing household doors?"

Berel shook his head. That sounded nothing like the castle picture in his mind.

Chapter 2Louder Still

Berel pointed toward the shelves.

"A book about DOORS."

Mr. Cohen had heard the word. He still did not know which kind of door or what Berel wanted to learn about it.

A boy waiting behind Berel shifted his book bag.

Berel felt as if everyone else understood what he wanted except the man at the desk.

Then his friend Chaim asked quietly, "Did you tell him about the castle?"

Berel looked at the paper sketch inside his library folder.

He had not shown it.

Chapter 3The Shape in His Folder

"Sorry I spoke so loudly," Berel said.

He took out the sketch and placed it on the desk after asking.

"I want to draw an arched castle doorway for a paper model. I need a picture showing the shape, not instructions to repair a door."

Mr. Cohen looked at the sketch.

"That helps. Let's check the castle books."

Berel had used the same word three times. This longer explanation finally carried something Mr. Cohen could use.

Chapter 4Beside the Picture Books

Mr. Cohen stayed with the boys at the appropriate shelf while their class teacher supervised the library visit.

One book had photographs of stone buildings. Another showed drawings of old castles.

Berel opened to a large arch above a wooden gate.

"This shape," he said, pointing without bending the page.

Mr. Cohen helped him read the caption.

Chaim found a smaller doorway on the next page.

The boys compared the tops. One was rounder; the other came to a point.

Chapter 5A More Exact Question

Berel asked whether he could borrow the drawing book under the class's usual library rules.

Mr. Cohen checked and approved the borrowing with the class teacher.

Berel kept his sketch flat in the folder.

Before leaving the desk, he thanked Mr. Cohen for helping him find the pictures.

"Next time I should say what I'm using it for," he added.

"That can make the search easier," Mr. Cohen said.

Chaim borrowed a book he had selected for his own project.

Chapter 6Back at the Model

In class, Berel showed Rebbi the doorway picture before changing his paper castle.

Rebbi helped him plan a safe paper opening. Cutting would follow the classroom rules.

Berel drew the arch on a practice scrap.

Chaim leaned over.

"The loud door?"

Berel smiled.

"The arched castle doorway."

He held up the sketch with its new label. This time the useful words were on the page, where someone besides Berel could see them.
