The White Stripe

Ages 12-15

Idy holds a colored stone inside her curved fingers.

She is showing its thin white stripe to the class.

At the back, a classmate leans forward.

"Which stripe?"

Idy lifts the stone closer to her face.

Her classmate stays leaning.

Idy sets the stone on its dark cloth and walks to the back of the room.

From there, the cloth shows clearly. The stone is a small bright spot at its center.

Idy goes back to the front. She turns the stone until the white stripe faces the room.

She moves the cloth away from the shadow of the demonstration stand.

At the back, her classmate sits upright.

Idy points beside the stripe, without covering it.

"That line."

Her classmate points toward the stone.

Idy continues her description. On the dark cloth, the white stripe stays in the open light.
