The Walk He Finished First
Chapter 1The Three Pictures
Totty took Yossi and his younger brother Dudi on a short supervised nature walk.
Each boy had an approved paper page with three things to notice: a leaf shape, a bark pattern, and a bird seen from the safe path.
They would stay together. Nobody would pick unknown plants or approach animals.
Yossi found the leaf shape quickly.
Dudi stopped to compare two leaves with Totty.
Yossi tapped his page.
"We already did that."
Chapter 2The Bark Patch
At the next safe stop, Yossi drew quick lines for the bark.
Dudi looked at the pattern on the trunk from where Totty directed him to stand.
"Some lines go around, not down."
He began adding them to his page.
Yossi had finished his sketch already.
"Come on. The bird is next."
Totty reminded him they were walking together.
Yossi stayed on the path, but kept calling for Dudi to hurry. The younger boy's pencil stopped each time.
Chapter 3Whose Page?
Totty asked Yossi to lower his voice and look at the two pages.
Yossi's bark patch had three fast lines. Dudi's had loops and little cracks.
"He is still doing his noticing," Totty said. "Finishing yours doesn't finish his."
Yossi looked at the trunk again.
Dudi's loops were there.
The page was not a race sheet. Yossi had turned three things to notice into three things to get over with.
Chapter 4A Safe Waiting Job
Yossi asked Totty what he could do while Dudi finished.
Totty pointed to an approved place beside him on the path.
Yossi could add a detail to his own sketch or watch quietly for a bird without walking ahead.
He chose another bark line.
The trunk now looked less like three scratches and more like the patch he had actually seen.
Dudi finished his loop and showed Totty.
Yossi did not call out "Finally."
Chapter 5The Bird Together
A small bird landed where they could see it from the path.
Totty kept the boys in their safe viewing place.
Dudi drew a round body. Yossi noticed the thin legs.
They pointed out details quietly instead of trying to get closer.
The bird flew away before either drawing was perfect.
"Mine has a very big head," Dudi said.
"Mine has legs longer than its tree," Yossi answered.
Totty smiled. They had both noticed something before it left.
Chapter 6At the Table
At home, the boys showed Mommy their pages.
Yossi described Dudi's bark loops before showing his own bird legs.
He apologized to Dudi for repeatedly hurrying him.
"I thought done meant we both had to move on."
Dudi put the pages beside each other.
They had walked the same path. They had not drawn at the same speed.
Next time, Yossi could have a useful waiting job without taking the pencil out of his brother's afternoon.
