The Stack Beside the Window

Ages 12-15

Yael stands on one side of the sorting table. Rochie stands opposite her.

Two stacks of books lie between them. The stack nearer the window leans a little. Its top book has a bent corner.

Rochie holds another book.

"On the right," Yael says.

Rochie puts it on the stack nearer the door.

"No. The right."

Rochie lifts the book. She looks down at both stacks and puts it back where it was.

"I said right."

Rochie takes her hands off the table.

Yael goes around the end of the table. She stands beside Rochie.

From here the window is on her left.

Yael's hand rises toward the book. She brings it back.

"The one by the window. Sorry."

Rochie lifts the book from the door stack.

She sets it on the other one. The bent corner shows at the edge.

Yael puts her next book on the same stack and presses its leaning edge straight.
