The Second Batch

Ages 12-15

Rochela cuts the last sandwich corner too close.

A triangle of bread falls onto the board. Under it, the filling shows along an uneven edge.

Her little sister looks down at the sandwich she helps spread.

"I can make another."

Rochela puts the knife down. Three neat sandwiches wait beside the uneven one.

The lunch container has a long compartment and a small square one. She places the first sandwich in the long space. Two more fit beside it.

The uneven sandwich will not fit there.

Rochela holds it above the board.

Her sister reaches for a fresh slice of bread.

Rochela puts the sandwich into the small compartment. Its cut-off corner leaves room for the little container of sliced cucumber.

She presses the lid down.

One bread edge catches beneath it. Rochela opens the lid and shifts the sandwich half an inch. The cucumber container stays beside it.

The lid closes.

Her sister puts the fresh slice back in the bread bag.

Rochela opens the lunch box once more. Three even edges fill the long compartment. In the little square space, the shorter sandwich lies beside the cucumber.
