The Reply That Became a Plan

Chapter 1The Fold

Mrs. Gold gave Nechama a folded note for Mrs. Stern.

"Please take this to the workroom. I need to know whether the girls can use the room for the costume fitting tomorrow."

Nechama took it across the corridor.

Mrs. Stern read the note, checked her workroom list, and wrote an answer underneath.

"Give this back to Mrs. Gold."

Nechama nodded.

On the way back, her friend Yitta asked about tomorrow's fitting.

"I think we can use the room," Nechama said.

She hadn't read the answer.

She had seen Mrs. Stern write it with a smile.

Chapter 2The Smiling Answer

Yitta went to tell two other girls to bring their costume bags.

Nechama continued toward the classroom.

Outside the door, she unfolded the note just enough to see the answer.

YES, FROM TWO UNTIL TWO THIRTY, WITH A TEACHER PRESENT. PLEASE CONFIRM.

Nechama looked at the words after YES.

The fitting usually took an hour.

Mrs. Gold was speaking to another teacher. Nechama put the folded note on her desk, then went to find Yitta.

By then, Yitta had told Malka, and Malka had told her cousin in the other class.

The smiling answer was travelling faster than the paper.

Chapter 3The Bigger Room

"It's confirmed," Yitta told her.

"I didn't say confirmed."

"You said we could use it."

"I said I thought so. But I hadn't read the note."

Yitta's face changed.

"Why didn't you say that?"

Nechama had wanted to give a useful answer. "I saw her smile" sounded less useful, so she had left it out.

Now the girls were planning a whole fitting in a half-hour room that still needed confirmation.

"I need to correct it," she said.

The word YES had been small on the page. Her version had made it much bigger.

Chapter 4Back to the Teacher

Nechama went straight to Mrs. Gold.

The teacher's cream sheitel was tucked neatly behind her ears.

"I delivered the note. Then I told Yitta I thought the fitting could happen before I read the answer. Girls are passing that on as confirmed."

Mrs. Gold opened the note fully.

"Thank you for telling me. This offers half an hour with a teacher, and asks me to confirm. I haven't done that yet."

She asked Nechama and Yitta to bring the girls they had told back to her, without making a new announcement of their own.

Nechama wished she could fix it by saying one clever sentence.

Instead, she had to find the actual people who had heard the wrong thing.

Chapter 5The Correction Circle

Mrs. Gold gathered five girls beside her desk.

Nechama explained what she had said and what she hadn't known.

"The room isn't confirmed for an hour. I answered before reading the reply."

Mrs. Gold showed them the timing and condition on the note.

"Please don't pass any new plan on yet. I will tell the class after Mrs. Stern and I agree."

One girl had already told her mother to leave a costume bag ready by the door.

Mrs. Gold helped her work out a clear correction to give at home.

Nechama could see why fixing the first sentence took longer than saying it had.

Chapter 6Two Thirty

Mrs. Gold spoke to Mrs. Stern directly.

The workroom was needed by another class at two thirty. That end time would not change.

They agreed that six girls could have short fittings in the room, with Mrs. Gold present. The others would have a separate fitting on another day.

Mrs. Gold wrote the names and times on the classroom board.

Nechama checked her own name. She was in the later group.

She had hoped to be among the first six.

Her early message did not give her a claim to the earlier fitting.

The actual plan was smaller and clearer than the one she had passed along.

Chapter 7The Paper Carrier

The next week, Mrs. Stern gave Nechama another written reply to carry.

Nechama asked, "Should I only deliver the paper, or may I explain it if someone asks?"

"Only deliver it," Mrs. Stern said. "The teacher will read it."

In the corridor, Yitta asked whether it was about the costumes.

"It is a reply for Mrs. Gold. I haven't been asked to explain it."

Yitta nodded.

Nechama did not add a guess because silence felt unhelpful.

She delivered the paper into Mrs. Gold's hand.

This time the written words arrived before any story about them did.

Chapter 8The Later Fitting

Nechama's own fitting took place at the agreed later time.

She brought her costume bag and helped fold the cloth she had used.

The fitting had not vanished because it had moved to another day.

Afterward, Mrs. Gold asked her to return the scissors to the teacher's desk. Nechama carried them closed, as the teacher showed her, and handed them back directly.

That was a task with a clear destination.

The note had been one too.

Not every useful errand needed her opinion attached to it.

She could carry something faithfully, ask when unsure, and let the people responsible decide what it meant for everyone else.
