The Quiet Corner She Gave Away
Chapter 1The Little Desk
Rochel liked the small desk in the corner of the dining room.
The younger children played in the kitchen after school. At this desk, she could read her assignment without hearing every block tower fall.
Her friend Baila was visiting for an hour while Baila's Mommy finished an errand.
"You can use the quiet desk," Rochel offered. "I don't need it."
Baila thanked her and opened a worksheet.
Chapter 2In the Bag
Rochel brought her own schoolbag to the kitchen table.
Inside was a reading assignment she had forgotten. She needed to read a page and answer questions before tomorrow.
Her brother drove a wooden truck across the table beside her.
She tried the first sentence. A block tower fell.
In the dining room, Baila was working quietly at Rochel's desk.
Rochel looked toward the doorway and felt annoyed.
Baila had not even asked whether she needed a turn.
Chapter 3The Offer Remembered
Mommy found Rochel staring at the reading page.
"Is something difficult?"
"Baila took my quiet place."
Mommy glanced toward the desk.
"Did you offer it to her?"
"I said I didn't need it. But I forgot this page."
Rochel heard her own offer again. Baila had accepted exactly what she had said.
Her forgotten assignment had changed what she needed. It had not changed what Baila had been told.
Chapter 4Two Worksheets
Mommy helped her look for another quiet spot.
The other table was needed for supper preparation. The little desk had room for one open workbook at a time.
"You can tell Baila what changed and ask about taking turns," Mommy said.
Rochel went to the dining room.
"I forgot I had a reading page. Could I have a turn here when you finish this question?"
Baila looked at her worksheet.
"I have one answer left. Then I need to draw a picture. I can do that in the kitchen."
Chapter 5Her Own Turn
Rochel waited while Baila finished the answer.
She put her book and pencil ready beside the desk, without crowding Baila's paper.
When Baila moved, Rochel read the first paragraph. It was easier to follow in the quieter space.
After she finished the questions, she brought her book to Mommy for a check.
Baila was drawing at the kitchen table. Rochel sat beside her and admired the little bird in the picture.
Chapter 6Before Offering
Next week, when Baila came again, Rochel opened her schoolbag before making an offer.
She had a short spelling page.
"I need the desk for this first," she said. "Then you can use it."
Baila put her bag beside the table and waited with a puzzle book.
Rochel finished her page and cleared the desk.
She still liked giving her friend a quiet place. This time, she had checked that her offer left room for her own work too.
