The Page She Finished for Her Sister

Chapter 1The Blue Border

Malky asked her older sister Rina to hold a ruler steady while she drew the blue border of a homemade card.

The girls sat at the kitchen table with Mommy nearby.

Malky had written a birthday greeting for Bubby. She wanted to draw a little vase underneath it.

Rina held the ruler. Malky drew one straight line, then moved the ruler for the next.

When Mommy called Malky to wash her hands before snack, she put down the blue pencil.

"I'll come back for the vase."

Chapter 2A Much Better Vase

Rina looked at the blank space under the greeting.

She was good at drawing flowers. She could finish the vase quickly and spare Malky the difficult part.

She took a plain practice scrap and tried a curved shape. It looked pleasing.

Then she drew it on Malky's card.

She added three stems, five flowers, and a little shadow.

By the time Malky came back, the space was filled.

Rina turned the card toward her.

"I finished it for you."

Chapter 3Not the Help She Asked For

Malky did not smile.

"I wanted to draw that."

"But these flowers look nice."

"They do. They're yours."

Rina looked at the blue border she had only helped hold straight. Malky had drawn that herself.

The card was supposed to carry Malky's work to Bubby, not simply the neatest possible vase.

Mommy joined them.

"What help did Malky ask for?" she asked.

"Holding the ruler," Rina said.

That request had not included filling the picture space.

Chapter 4A Card Still Worth Keeping

Rina apologized for drawing without asking. She did not ask Malky to praise the flowers before accepting the apology.

Mommy helped them consider what could be changed without tearing the card.

Malky wanted to keep her greeting and border. The flower drawing could not be erased neatly.

Rina offered to draw on a new card from the beginning.

Malky shook her head.

"I want to make my picture. Can it go inside?"

Mommy showed her the clear inner panel.

Chapter 5Her Own Picture

Malky drew a round vase inside the card.

One side was slightly wider than the other. She put three large flowers above it, with crooked stems she liked.

Rina stayed beside her without reaching for the pencil.

When Malky asked how to make a leaf shape, Rina demonstrated on the practice scrap rather than on the card.

Malky tried it herself.

She signed the greeting. Inside she wrote a short note saying the outer flowers were Rina's and the inner vase was hers.

Chapter 6The Ruler Again

Malky wanted a straight line beneath her name.

"Will you hold the ruler?"

Rina held its edges. Malky drew the line.

"Anything else?"

"No, it's finished."

Rina let go. Both girls' work was named on the card.
