The Old Roof
Ages 12-15
Mashie's old drawing has a curled roof.
The curl loops above the house and nearly touches its chimney. Mashie draws it three times on the scrap beside her page.
Her classmate places the corrected drawing next to it.
On that one, the roof ends in a straight edge. The house looks steady instead of leaning toward its own chimney.
Mashie traces the curl on her old page.
"That edge has to stop here," her classmate says, pointing to the corrected version.
Mashie puts down her pencil.
The new drawing is the one they will mount. Beside it, the old roof still loops into the white space.
Mashie slides the old page beneath the new one.
Her classmate moves the mounting board closer. Mashie lifts the new drawing onto it.
The roof ends straight. Its chimney has room on both sides.
Mashie fastens the first corner, then the next.
Beside the board, her old drawing rests beneath the unused scraps. Above their edge, one little roof curl shows.
