Nussbaum Mind

The Jobs He Counted as Two

Chapter 1Two Jobs Each

Mommy asked the boys to help prepare the family room before cousins arrived.

Mendy would fold the clean napkins and carry the folded pile to the low shelf. Dudy would put the small cushions on the chairs and place the picture books in the basket.

Mommy handled the heavy furniture herself.

"Two jobs each," Mendy said.

He liked that. Two and two sounded perfectly fair.

Dudy put a cushion on the first chair.

Chapter 2The Last Cushion

Dudy finished the cushions and books while Mendy was still folding napkins.

There were many napkins. Each needed its corners matched, folded, and placed flat.

Dudy asked Mommy whether he could sit and read. She said yes.

Mendy looked at his brother opening a book.

"That's not fair! We both had two jobs. You should still be working."

Dudy looked up.

"I did mine."

Mendy folded the next napkin with a crooked corner.

Chapter 3What the Numbers Missed

Mommy came to the low table.

She listened to Mendy's complaint and looked at the remaining stack.

"You counted the jobs. Did you count how much work each job needed?"

Mendy looked at the cushions. Each one had needed putting down once.

The books had been lying beside the basket.

His napkins needed many separate folds. Carrying them later would be short, but folding was not.

Two labels had hidden very different amounts of work.

Chapter 4The Remaining Stack

"Can we share what is left?" Mendy asked.

Mommy checked what still needed doing and asked Dudy whether he would help with a portion of the napkins.

Dudy agreed after finishing the page he was reading.

Mommy divided the remaining stack and showed them the same simple fold.

Mendy did not snatch away the book or order Dudy back.

Dudy had finished the work he had been given. The new arrangement needed Mommy's help and his answer.

Chapter 5A Smaller Pile

The boys worked beside each other.

One napkin became a triangle by accident. Dudy opened it again.

"Mine wants to be a hat."

Mendy laughed and showed him where the corners met.

Their piles grew. The stack in the middle shrank.

Mommy checked the low shelf before they carried over the finished napkins.

The room was ready before the cousins arrived. The boys chose a picture book together while they waited.

Chapter 6Before the Next Visit

At the next family visit, Mendy asked what each helping job involved before the boys chose.

Mommy described the work and what was safe for each boy.

There were still different-sized jobs. They did not turn into equal work just because each had a name.

Dudy picked up the book basket.

Mendy took the napkins, but this time Mommy had set out only a small pile.

"Two jobs?" Dudy asked.

"Let's look at the jobs first," Mendy said.
