The Ending She Kept for Herself
Chapter 1Two Writers
Chany and Tzippy wrote a story together for Mrs. Green's class.
Their heroine, Bina, had lost the brass key to a little garden shed. She and her aunt needed it before putting away the seed trays.
Chany wrote the opening. Tzippy wrote the middle. They would work on the ending together.
Chany already had a surprise in mind: the key had been in Bina's apron pocket all along.
She smiled at the idea but did not tell Tzippy. A surprise seemed better if nobody knew it yet.
Chapter 2The Empty Pocket
The next morning Tzippy brought her middle scene.
Bina and her aunt searched carefully. Bina turned every apron pocket inside out over the kitchen table. No key fell out.
Then they remembered carrying the trays along the garden path.
Mrs. Green read the scene and said its clear details could stay.
Chany read the empty-pocket sentence twice.
Her private ending did not fit it.
She picked up an eraser, then put it down. This was Tzippy's page, not a loose sentence she could remove by herself.
Chapter 3What Had Not Been Said
"The apron pockets can't all be empty," Chany said.
Tzippy looked puzzled.
"Why? They check them before going outside."
"Because the key is supposed to be there at the end."
"You didn't tell me that."
Chany looked at the first scene. It did not mention her planned surprise either.
She had treated the idea in her head as if it were an agreed part of their shared story.
"I wanted it to be a surprise," she said. "But you needed to know what I was planning."
Chapter 4Keeping the Search
The girls asked Mrs. Green to help them talk through the mismatch.
She did not choose an ending for them.
"Read what your story has already shown. Then find an ending it can support."
Tzippy wanted to keep the careful pocket search. Chany still wanted Bina to discover the key herself.
They reread the garden-path memory.
Chany pointed to a seed tray Bina had carried.
"Could it have slipped underneath that?"
"We need something earlier to make that possible," Tzippy said.
Chapter 5A Clink on the Path
They added a small moment to the opening together.
Bina heard a clink while setting down a tray, but thought the sound came from its handle.
At the ending, she remembered the clink. Her aunt helped lift the tray safely, and Bina spotted the key beneath it.
They read all three scenes in order.
No pocket suddenly changed from empty to full. The key's hiding place followed from something the reader had already heard.
Mrs. Green checked the revised story after both girls agreed.
Chapter 6The Last Sentence
Tzippy wrote the last sentence: Bina hung the key on its proper hook before helping her aunt with the trays.
Chany read it aloud.
Her first surprise was gone. A different one had grown from both girls' pages.
"Next time I'll tell you my ending idea before you write the middle," she said.
Tzippy slid the story between them.
"We can still surprise the readers."
