The Counter on the Last Square
Ages 9-12
Gershon and Zev move wooden counters along two rows of paper squares.
The first counter to reach its last square ends the game.
Gershon moves his counter onto the last square.
Zev looks at his own row. Two squares are still empty ahead of his counter.
Gershon slides his counter back one square.
Zev reaches for the turn card.
Gershon keeps a finger on his counter. The last square is empty again.
Zev turns the card over and begins moving.
"Wait," Gershon says.
Zev stops with his hand above his counter.
Gershon moves his counter forward to the last one.
"I got there."
"You moved it back."
"I did."
Zev puts his counter back on its square. He sets the turn card beside the rows.
Gershon takes his finger off the counter.
Zev folds his unfinished row along its old crease.
Gershon leaves his counter on the last square while he gathers the cards.
