The Compass He Kept Past Lunch

Chapter 1Four Round Towers

Rebbi's drawing lesson included round towers for an imaginary paper castle.

Dovid had forgotten his school-approved drawing compass. He told Rebbi rather than taking a tool from another desk.

Rebbi allowed him to ask Yossi about borrowing his, under the classroom tool rules.

"Until lunch," Yossi said. "Then I need it for my own design."

Dovid agreed.

With Rebbi supervising safe use, he began four circles. Three came out well. The fourth looked like a potato wearing a crown.

Chapter 2One More Try

Dovid wanted to replace the potato tower.

He had erased its outline twice when the lunch bell rang.

Yossi came to collect his compass.

"I only need one more circle," Dovid said.

"I need it now."

"You let me borrow it."

Yossi held out his hand.

Dovid looked down at the tool. He had permission to use it, but that permission had included a stopping time.

He was treating the first yes as though the rest of the sentence had vanished.

Chapter 3The Circle Can Wait

Rebbi reminded the boys to close and hand over the compass as taught, with no sharp point exposed.

Dovid followed the rule and returned it.

His fourth tower stayed unfinished.

"Sorry. I agreed to lunch, then argued when it came."

Yossi checked his tool and put it in its case.

Dovid did not ask repeatedly until the answer changed. He put his castle page flat in his folder and went to lunch.

The missing circle did not have to become a missing promise.

Chapter 4After Lunch

At the next drawing period, Dovid asked Rebbi how to finish without keeping Yossi's tool.

Rebbi showed him the approved paper circle templates available to the class.

They came in different sizes. Dovid compared one with the three towers he had already drawn.

It was close enough for his invented castle. He used the template with the teacher's permission.

His new round tower had a narrow doorway. The potato outline left a faint gray shadow outside it.

He kept working instead of borrowing time Yossi had never offered.

Chapter 5A New Request

Later, Yossi admired the castle gate.

Dovid asked whether they could compare designs during the next teacher-approved sharing period.

"Yes, after I finish my roof," Yossi said.

Dovid nodded.

This time he heard the condition along with the yes.

He worked on his own flag until Yossi was ready. Neither boy had to leave his page half-done to satisfy a request with different words inside it.

Chapter 6The Potato Tower

At sharing time, Yossi noticed the gray shape around the fourth tower.

"An extra wall?"

"A former potato," Dovid said.

Yossi laughed and showed his roof.

The two designs had different towers. Dovid's circles had not all come from the same tool.

But the borrowed compass was back where it belonged, when its owner needed it. The circle had waited. Yossi had not been made to wait instead.
