The Butterfly Arrow

Ages 6-9

Odel and her friend are choosing which picture to put on their class garden sign.

"The butterfly," her friend says.

Odel picks up the flower picture.

Her friend puts the butterfly beside it.

"That one."

Odel holds the flower against the sign.

"Flowers belong in a garden."

Her friend lowers the butterfly.

Odel looks at its little square paper backing. One wing is folded behind it.

"Tell me the rest."

Her friend opens the wing. The butterfly's body has a little arrow beneath it, pointing toward the garden gate.

"It shows which way."

Odel puts down her flower picture. She holds the butterfly against the sign with its arrow facing the gate.

Odel fastens the square backing. Beside the sign, Odel's flower picture stays loose on the ground.
