The Bumps in the Bag

Ages 6-9

Sigal sets a thick cloth bag on the rug. She cannot see through its sides. Beside her knee lies her mitten, with a loose thread at its thumb.

Her friend puts a folded cloth in the bag.

Sigal reaches inside. Before her fingers reach the bottom, she pulls her hand out.

She tips the cloth onto the rug.

She puts her mitten in the bag.

Her hand goes through the opening. Her fingers find the thumb and its loose thread.

She rubs the thread between two fingers.

Sigal takes out the mitten and sets it beside her knee.

She puts the folded cloth back in the bag.

Her hand goes in after it. One finger touches a raised dot. She moves it across a row of dots, then back along the row.

"Bumps. Little round ones."

Her friend tips the bag onto the rug. The cloth unfolds beneath Sigal's hand.

The mitten lies beside her knee. Her fingers rest on the cloth's bumps.
