The Bucket He Kept Filling
Chapter 1The Mold
Sruly and Grandpa worked at the sand tray in Grandpa's garden.
The tray stood on a low, steady bench. Beside it were a small plastic bucket used as a mold, dry play sand, and a cup of water Grandpa had brought for the activity.
Sruly wanted a wall with sharp little ridges along the top.
He filled the mold with dry sand and tipped it over.
The sand spread into a heap.
"It needs water," Grandpa said.
Sruly sprinkled a little from the cup.
Chapter 2Sharper Ridges
He mixed the damp patch and filled the mold again.
This wall stood. Two ridges were clear; a third crumbled when Sruly tapped the plastic too hard.
"Nearly," Grandpa said.
Sruly studied the broken ridge.
If a little water had helped so much, perhaps more would make every ridge stay.
He poured another small splash, then another.
The sand grew shiny. He packed the mold tightly and lifted it.
A soft lump sagged onto the tray.
Chapter 3More of the Same
Sruly stared at it.
"Maybe it isn't mixed enough."
He stirred carefully. The lump still sagged when he tried again.
His hand moved toward the cup.
Grandpa held it back gently.
"Before another pour, look at what changed."
The first heap had been loose and dry. The second wall had stood. The newest sand was much wetter, but its wall would not stand at all.
Sruly rubbed a little between his fingers.
"More water didn't keep helping."
Chapter 4Two Small Patches
Grandpa helped him put two little portions of fresh dry sand in separate spaces on the tray.
They left one dry. Grandpa helped Sruly add just a little water to the other and mix it through.
The dry portion fell apart in the mold.
The damp portion kept its shape when Sruly lifted the plastic slowly.
He compared its dull, crumbly surface with the shiny wet patch from before.
"This one feels different," he said.
He tried the damp portion once more without adding anything. Another small wall stood.
Chapter 5A Place for the Wet Sand
Sruly looked at the soggy patch.
"Did I ruin all of that?"
"We can mix some fresh dry sand into a small part and test it," Grandpa said. "We don't need to change the whole tray at once."
They adjusted one portion together. It took more dry sand than Sruly had expected.
He tested before filling the big mold.
The wall held. He stopped reaching for the water cup.
Grandpa set the unused water aside.
Chapter 6The Last Ridge
Sruly made three walls around a tiny courtyard.
One ridge chipped as he lifted a mold. He left that wall in place rather than wet the whole mixture for one small chip.
He put a little paper flag in the courtyard with Grandpa's help.
"The first water was useful," he said.
Grandpa nodded.
"And you checked when that changed."
Sruly shook loose sand from the empty mold. The cup still held water, and the courtyard did not need it.
