The Box He Called Too Small
Chapter 1The Highest Roof
Nachum's cardboard village had a bakery, a school, and a tall clock tower.
He had painted the clock hands himself. They pointed to twelve because those were the easiest hands to draw straight.
Rebbi put an empty transport box on the classroom table.
"Our displays will travel in these. Tomorrow we'll set them out in the other room."
Nachum lowered his village toward the box. The tower rose above the rim.
"Mine won't fit."
"Show me before you change anything," Rebbi said.
Chapter 2One Tall Piece
Nachum tilted the village.
The tower fit lower, but the bakery slid against the wall. He brought the base level again.
"Could we leave the lid up?"
Rebbi explained that the closed boxes would sit securely on the transport cart. Nothing could stick above their tops.
Nachum looked at the tower's blue roof.
"Then I should have made a boring short village."
Rebbi did not agree with that.
"The box has a job during the move. The display has a different job on the table."
Chapter 3The Back of the Base
Nachum inspected his model with Rebbi beside him.
The tower stood on a narrow folded panel behind the houses. He had attached that panel with two paper tabs, not glued its whole edge down.
The houses sat on a second, lower panel.
"Could the tower panel travel flat?" Nachum asked.
Rebbi helped free the tabs without tearing the painted paper.
They laid the tower panel in the empty box. It fit.
The houses fit beside it, but Nachum still had to decide how the two panels would meet tomorrow.
Chapter 4A Practice Village
He set both panels on the classroom table.
The houses stood in front. The tower panel rested behind them, held upright by its folded foot.
From across the table, a gap looked like an alley.
Nachum drew two small matching marks on the hidden panel edges so he could find the same position again.
He tried folding the tower down, then setting it up.
The blue roof brushed one house.
He shifted the house panel a little forward and checked again. This time the roof stayed clear.
Chapter 5Inside the Rim
Rebbi supplied a protective sheet between the flat panel and the houses.
Nachum packed the pieces. He tucked a drawing of their table positions beside them.
Nothing rose above the box rim.
The lid closed without pressure.
His friend Berel looked in before it was shut.
"Where did the tall part go?"
"It's still here," Nachum said. "Just not standing yet."
Rebbi handled loading and moving the boxes. The boys left the classroom without carrying the cart themselves.
Chapter 6Twelve Again
At the exhibit table, Nachum unpacked with Rebbi nearby.
He matched the little marks and stood the tower panel behind the houses.
The clock appeared above the bakery roof, its hands still pointing to twelve.
Berel stepped back to look.
"It's tall again."
Nachum moved the packing drawing out of sight.
The box had not needed to hold an upright village. It had needed to carry all the pieces safely to the place where the village could stand.
