The Bent Corner of the Display Card

Chapter 1The Last Card

Rivka carried the last card to the classroom display.

Her Bais Yaakov class had spent a week making a display about growing plants. Each group had drawn one stage and written a short caption.

Rivka's group had drawn the roots.

As she slipped their card from its folder, the upper corner caught on the edge.

It bent forward.

She pulled it free and saw a sharp crease above the picture.

Their careful drawing now had a flaw everyone would see.

Chapter 2Start Again

Rivka laid the card on a desk.

The roots were still clear. The caption was untouched.

All she could look at was the bent corner.

"We have to do it again," she told her group.

"The whole card?" asked Chani.

"It won't look right beside the others."

They had no spare drawing of the roots. Starting over would mean borrowing more card, copying the picture, and asking the girls to write the caption again.

Rivka reached for a blank sheet.

Chapter 3Before the Blank Sheet

Chani put a finger beside the crease.

"Can we ask Mrs. Stern first?"

Rivka wanted to fix the mistake before the teacher saw it.

The teacher was the person deciding how the cards would be mounted. She might know whether the damaged part mattered.

Rivka carried the card over.

"I bent the corner taking it out. I thought we should start again."

Mrs. Stern looked at the picture, the words, and the crease.

"The work is readable. Let's see what repair fits the mounting."

Chapter 4The Backing Sheet

The cards were going onto larger green backing sheets.

Mrs. Stern showed Rivka where the damaged corner would sit.

They could flatten it gently and support it from behind. They did not need to cut through the roots or cover the caption.

Rivka asked Chani to hold the backing still while she positioned the card.

She used the teacher's suggested small piece of tape on the back.

The crease had not vanished.

The card lay flat enough to mount, and all the group's work remained visible.

Chapter 5One Card, Not Every Card

Rivka stood back.

The repaired corner still caught her eye.

She considered trimming every group's card so the edges would match perfectly.

That would change work other girls had made and could cut too close to their pictures.

She had permission to repair this card with the teacher, not to redesign the entire display.

She put the scissors down.

Chani read the caption aloud to check it was still clear.

It was.

They carried the backed card to its place.

Chapter 6The Visitor's Question

The next morning, another class came to look at the display.

One girl stopped by the roots.

"Is that tiny drawing a new root?"

Chani explained it was a root hair taking in water.

Rivka glanced at the upper corner. The visitor hadn't asked about it.

That didn't prove nobody would ever notice the crease.

It showed the card could still do the job it had been made for.

The drawing led to a question about plants, not a request to start over.

Chapter 7Packing It Away

When the display came down, Rivka helped remove the cards carefully.

Their root card still had its green backing and small repair.

She put it in a wider folder so the corner would not catch again.

"Are we keeping it?" Chani asked.

"Yes. The picture and caption are good."

Rivka checked the other cards before stacking them. She did not promise they would never bend.

She made enough space in the folder and carried it flat.

There was something useful to change in how she handled the work.

Chapter 8A Place for the Crease

A week later, Mrs. Stern used the root card in a lesson.

Rivka could still find the crease from her seat.

She could also see the roots and read every word.

The card wasn't perfect. It had not become worthless.

Her group had kept a week's work, made a small repair, and avoided cutting into anybody else's picture.

When the teacher put it away, Rivka fetched the wider folder.

This time the corner slid in without catching.
