Illustration coming soonThe Sun on the Reading Seat
Shaindy takes her book into the garden with Mommy. A patch of shade lies beside the tree. Mommy sets a small reading mat there.
Shaindy sits on the mat. She opens her book. Mommy sits beside her with a basket of clean cloths to fold.
After a while, sunshine reaches one corner of the mat. Then it reaches Shaindy’s shoes. She closes her book. "This was the shady place," she says.
"It was," says Mommy. "Look where the shade is now." Shaindy sees a darker patch on the grass beside them.
"Did I choose the wrong place?" asks Shaindy. "You chose shade when we came out," says Mommy. "We can choose again now."
Shaindy lifts her book. "Please help me move the mat." Mommy picks it up. They put it in the new patch of shade together.
Shaindy sits down. A little grass sticks to the edge of the mat. She brushes it away. "My page did not move," she says, finding the place in her book.
Mommy finishes folding. Shaindy reads beside her. Before they go indoors, she looks at the mat once more. For now, their reading place is shady.

Grown-up notes and answers
1. In the patch of shade beside the tree.
2. Sunshine.
3. Where the shade is now.
4. Yes. The conditions change later.
5. Help moving the mat.
6. Accept a simple drawing showing that a useful place can change, not an exact shadow diagram.
7. Do not look at the sun, leave supervision or stay in heat. Changes are optional observations, not guaranteed on demand.
8. Her reading page. Moving the place does not require starting the story again.
