The Little Pour

Rafi has a little cup. Mommy has a little jug. There is cool water in the jug. The cup sits on a tray.

"My turn," says Rafi. Mommy puts a little water in the jug. Rafi tips it. Pour, pour. Water runs over the cup. The tray catches it.

"Help me stop," says Rafi. Mommy helps him lift the jug. Rafi puts it down. Together, they wipe the tray.

Mommy puts less water in the jug. Rafi tips it again. "Stop," he says. Mommy helps him lift it. A little water stays in the cup. Rafi sets the jug down.

Point to the cup

A grown-up shows an empty unbreakable cup, a small empty jug and a dry tray. Point to one while the grown-up names it, or watch.

Tip and lift

With a grown-up beside you, tip and lift an empty, unbreakable cup.

Help me stop

A grown-up says, "Help me stop." Copy the words or raise a hand if you want.

Show the tray

Where does the water go when it runs over the cup? Point to that place.

Wipe together

With a grown-up, wipe a small dry area on a clean tray using a soft cloth.

A little water

A grown-up pours a small amount of cool water into an unbreakable cup on a tray. Watch or help while seated together.

Put it down

Practice putting an empty cup down on a clear surface with a grown-up nearby.

Tell the story

A grown-up reads the last paragraph again. Who helps Rafi lift the jug? Say a word or listen to the answer.

Grown-up notes and answers

1. Use large safe objects, no glass. Cup holds water, jug pours, tray catches overflow. Listening is enough.

2. No water is needed. Adult checks size and grip; child may watch.

3. Any comfortable response or listening is enough. Do not require speech.

4. Onto the tray.

5. No spill needs to be staged. No cleaning chemicals. Grown-up handles cleanup.

6. Adult controls amount and support; no hot liquids, glass or deep containers. Do not leave child alone with water.

7. Stable unbreakable cup only. This is not a speed test.

8. Mommy. A second pour does not mean Rafi must do it alone.
