The Edge of the Tape

Dovi wants to attach a paper sign to his cardboard house. Mommy brings a short piece of tape from the roll. She handles the cutter.

Dovi presses the tape over the edge of the sign. The sign stays on. He wants another piece for the other edge.

Mommy picks up the roll. The loose end has stuck down flat. Dovi turns the roll slowly. "Where does it start?"

Mommy finds the end with her fingernail and lifts it. She cuts another short piece. Dovi sticks it on the sign.

Then Mommy pulls a little more tape from the roll. She folds the very end back onto itself. A small tab is no longer sticky.

"Feel this part," says Mommy. Dovi touches the tab. He lifts it easily. Mommy holds the roll steady.

Mommy sets the roll aside. Dovi straightens his sign. Later, he asks for tape for a paper path. He finds the folded tab.

He points to it instead of turning the roll around and around. Mommy cuts the piece he needs. The cardboard house gets a path.
