Call Me Orly
Ages 6-9
Orly's friend gives her a nickname during recess.
It rhymes with a food Orly does not like. Two other girls repeat it.
Orly turns away from the group.
Her friend follows with the skipping rope. She holds out one handle.
"Your turn," she says.
Orly does not take the handle.
"Call me Orly."
Her friend swings the rope once against the pavement.
"It's a joke."
"I want to play. Call me Orly."
The other girls wait beside the fence. One rolls her handle between her palms.
Her friend lifts the handle toward her.
"Orly's turn."
Orly takes it. She stands at the far end while one girl steps into the middle.
The rope makes a loose loop on the pavement. Orly moves back until the loop straightens.
Her friend begins turning. Orly turns with her.
At the next change, a girl beside the fence says Orly's name. Orly sets down her handle and steps into the middle.
