Beside the Chair

Ages 6-9

Mazal carries her cushion to the reading rug. She pats it flat at her usual spot.

Vered puts their book on the table instead.

Mazal leaves the cushion and sits across from her. Other classmates settle on the rug.

She begins the first line in her low voice.

Vered tilts her head. She leans across the table. Her pencil stops beneath the words.

Mazal sets the book down.

She stands, lifts her chair and carries it around the table. She sets its legs down beside Vered's chair.

One classmate looks up from the rug. Mazal sits in the new place.

She holds the book between the chairs. Her sleeve touches one edge. Vered's sleeve touches the other.

Mazal reads the line again in the same low voice.

Vered turns the page and reads the next line aloud.

On the rug, Mazal's cushion lies flat. Between the two chairs, the book stays open.
